Sample question:
Write a critical appreciation of this passage, relating your discussion to your reading of the Gothic.

There is no set way to approach this question. However, some key pointers are as follows:
(i) Focus on the extract and explore it in detail
(ii) Although it is a good idea to identify typically Gothic elements or explore how the extract is typical (or atypical) of its time and place in the Gothic canon, do not start every paragraph: “The Gothic trope of …. is seen in the extract”. Any Gothic elements must be analysed in detail, specific effects explored.
(iii) Remember to cover language, structure and form - i.e. write about novelistic features
(iv) QUOTE as frequently as you can; group short quotations
(v) Use technical terms (PETAL paragraphs)
(vi) In your introduction, locate the extract / novel in the Gothic tradition (is it High Gothic, for example?) and indicate what you think the key concerns or features of the extract are. Are they typical of Gothic writing from that period?
(vii) You could work through the extract chronologically, with paragraphs covering the beginning – middle – end
(viii) You could write paragraphs on different aspects, e.g. character, setting, thematic concerns, Gothic tropes etc, but beware “ticking off” features
(ix) You could write paragraphs on language, structure and form, although this lacks finesse; it is better to make a series of evaluative points and illustrate them in detail
(x) Context can be social, historical, or literary… but it must be specific and relevant. Pay attention to the date the extract was published and try to avoid confusing ‘Victorian’ with 19th Century; be aware of developments with the Century (see Mr Clej’s useful 1818 vs 1897 document!)
(xi) The analysis of form / narrative perspective can be a weakness for many candidates, so try and build up your knowledge of this as we move through the course.
A simple framework for annotating and analysing an extract:
Context – when was it written, what do I know about the history / politics / events, author, Gothic literature of that period?
What is the overall structure of the extract? How does the writer develop setting / character / relationships / thematic concerns? How does the tension build?
What is the style, tone, expression, atmosphere?
What language devices or images are used to create impact?
What structure devices are used to create impact?
What form is the extract in? What does this add to the reader’s experience?
How / why is the extract Gothic? And, does it diverge from the Gothic?
